The Mississauga Indoor Football Association is still accepting registrations for its winter season, which runs until the beginning of March.
League co-ordinator Liston Bates says the league offers children between the ages of nine and 17 the chance to develop their skills in a competition-free environment. The league doesn’t keep score and championships aren’t awarded at the end of the season.
Bates said the best part about the six-on-six league is that every child on the field has the chance to be a star. Coaches can also go on the field to consult with players between plays.
“In indoor, every player is an eligible receiver, so those big guys on the line, who normally don’t win MVPs, can catch a touchdown,” Bates said. “As well, parents can see their kids, up close and personal, with no elements of weather obstructing them. They get to see them grow right before their eyes.”
The league plays most of its games Saturday mornings out of the Canlan Sportsplex on Wolfedale Rd., with a few games played at the Hershey Centre. There is also an adult division, which plays Friday nights.
In addition to a full tackle program, MIFA is able to offer a 12-week flag football season, thanks to a grant from the Dixie Bloor Neighbourhood Centre. Players can register for the full tackle program for $275, with all equipment paid for. The cost for the flag program is $75 per player.
No matter which type of football players sign up for, Bates believes they’ll see their game improve significantly in time for the summer outdoor season.
“Come spring, these kids don’t have to rethink what they’re doing, they’re in great shape and the passion of the game doesn’t die once a season stops,” Bates said. “It’s a great program to keep them going.”
On Friday, MIFA’s adult division will be holding its annual Holiday Food Drive night at the Hershey Centre Sports Dome. Fans can get in by donating a non-perishable food item to St. Martin of Tours Church.
